The agent of Alphonso Davies has hit out at Canada’s management of the defender after Davies sustained an ACL injury against the USA.

Davies is facing at least six months on the sidelines after the Bayern Munich star was forced off in the 12th minute of Canada’s 2-1 win over the United States in the Concacaf Nations League third-place playoff on Sunday. The left-back will miss the rest of the season as Bayern compete for the Bundesliga and Champions League.

The 24-year-old’s agent, Nedal Huoseh, has now hit out at Canada and said Davies should not have been involved in the game. He said Davies communicated an injury to the Canadian management but was played regardless.

“He shouldn’t have played in the USA friendly third-place match. I was surprised that he started because he had communicated he wasn’t good to start,” he said, as per German journalist Phillip Kessler.

“A source within CSA (Canada FA) told me Friday night that Alphonso wouldn’t start but might get a few minutes. I told them that he shouldn’t play at all.”

On Canada coach Jesse Marsch, he added: “In my opinion he should have managed the situation better, this could have been 100% preventable. Prior to Canada, Jesse has coached professionally at the highest level and should know very well not to take risks with players when they tell you they can’t play.

“The national team shouldn’t make emotional decisions based on individual success. I know it was a match against the USA and there was a lot of motivation to win but players’ health should come first.

“National teams need to do a better job protecting these players. I know he’s in good hands with Bayern’s medical team and will recover from this setback.”
