Ruben Amorim has discussed his decision to allow Andre Onana to leave Manchester United.
Onana has joined Trabzonspor on a season-long loan deal after being informed that he does not feature in Amorim’s plans this season.
The Cameroonian joined from Inter Milan for a fee in the region of £47m in 2023, having helped the Italian side to the Champions League final.
However, Onana’s time in the Premier League was punctuated by errors and he endured a nightmare performance as the club crashed out of the Carabao Cup to fourth-tier Grimsby Town last month.
Onana will now spend the season on loan in Turkey and Amorim admitted the time was right for change.
“I think we understood that this needed a change and sometimes it is hard to point out why. Sometimes it is the moment, the bad luck in some moments,” Amorim said at his pre-match press conference ahead of this weekend’s Manchester Derby.
“It is hard on him, on us. Our thinking is to have a change in the goalkeepers but I wish the best for Andre Onana.
“He was really good at working and trying to help the players, but sometimes you can have all the quality in the world but you need a change.”
