Argentina has become a recurring thread in Flamengo’s Copa Libertadores triumphs, with every trophy featuring at least one Argentine element. According to Globo.com, the Rio club visit Estudiantes in La Plata on Wednesday at 21:30 Brasília time looking to keep that pattern and move closer to qualification.
In 2025, Flamengo travelled to Argentina three times before lifting the trophy. They drew 1-1 with Central Córdoba in the group stage, squeezed past Estudiantes on penalties after a 1-0 defeat in normal time in the quarter-finals, then knocked out Racing in the semi-finals with a 1-1 away draw after winning the first leg at the Maracanã.
In 2022 they drew 2-2 with Talleres in Córdoba, the only match Dorival Júnior’s side did not win in an unbeaten run. They then beat Vélez Sarsfield 4-0 in the semi-finals. In 2019 they did not travel to Argentina, defeating River Plate 2-1 in Lima with two late Gabigol goals, and since 2017 only 2019 and 2024 lacked a visit.
Back in 1981 there was no trip to Argentina or local opponent, although Cobreloa coach Vicente Cantatore was Rosario-born and the first-leg referee was Carlos Espósito. Flamengo have not won in the country since the 4-0 at Vélez in 2022, taking three draws and two defeats since.
Overall, Flamengo have played 61 times in Argentina, with 16 wins, 21 draws and 24 defeats. They lead Group A on six points, Estudiantes are second with four, Independiente Medellín have one and Cusco none.
