Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard is set to remain sidelined until after the November international break due to a knee injury.

The influential Gunners skipper is poised to miss a busy period for Mikel Arteta’s title-chasing side that includes Premier League matches against Fulham, Crystal Palace, Burnley and Sunderland, in addition to Champions League meetings with Atletico Madrid and Slavia Prague, plus a Carabao Cup last-16 clash with Brighton.

Odegaard suffered a left knee injury during Arsenal’s 2-0 home win over West Ham before the international break and was replaced by Martin Zubimendi, making unwanted Premier League history as the first player ever to be substituted in the first half on three successive starts.

The 26-year-old had already been battling a recurring shoulder injury sustained in the 5-0 rout of newly-promoted Leeds on August 23, which led to a reduced role in the defeat by title rivals Liverpool.

Odegaard looked to have recovered from that issue and went away on international duty with Norway last month, where he played twice before breaking down again after less than 20 minutes of the 3-0 win over Nottingham Forest.

He sat out both the subsequent Champions League win over Athletic Club and last-gasp draw with Manchester City before returning with a superb display against Olympiacos, before a collision with Crysencio Summerville led to him lasting only half an hour against West Ham as he suffered damage to his medial collateral ligament (MCL).

Odegaard was pictured wearing a knee brace after the game and Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta admitted the player “did not feel good” about the injury.

He withdrew from the Norway squad as a result, though was present in the stands at Oslo’s Ullevaal Stadion on Saturday as they thrashed Israel 5-0 in World Cup qualifying thanks to a hat-trick from Erling Haaland.

Stale Solbakken’s side host New Zealand in a friendly on Tuesday before final crunch qualifiers against Estonia and Italy in November, which Odegaard will not be involved in as things stand after the BBC reported he would be out until after the next international break.

Fellow midfield star Declan Rice also went off with back pain against West Ham, but quickly shook off the knock and captained England in the absence of Harry Kane during Thursday’s 3-0 friendly win over Wales at Wembley.

Noni Madueke, Kai Havertz and Gabriel Jesus (all knee) are all currently sidelined for Arsenal alongside Odegaard, with Arteta previously expressing hope that Deadline Day signing Piero Hincapie would be fit to play following the international break after a groin problem picked up in training.

The Gunners return to top-flight action on Saturday with a teatime trip to face London rivals Fulham at Craven Cottage, before Atletico visit the Emirates Stadium.

Arsenal’s first game back after the November break is at home to Tottenham in the north London derby, followed by high-profile games against Bayern Munich and Chelsea.
