Mikel Arteta has been dealt another injury blow ahead of crucial clash

Viktor Gyokeres is pushing to return to the Arsenal side for their trip to Brentford today, and he will have one less competitor in his position, with Kai Havertz suffering another injury setback.

Gyokeres scored twice off the bench against Sunderland at the weekend and could be rewarded by getting the nod at the Gtech Community Stadium.

Havertz, meanwhile, has suffered a muscular injury, which could see him miss another extended period after he recently returned from a long-term knee problem.

The German had performed superbly on his return to action, but is now likely to sit out this match, as well as the north London derby.

He could also then be ruled out for the FA Cup tie with Wigan and the Premier League encounter against Wolves.

Bukayo Saka is set to be unavailable again as he continues to manage a hip injury, but it remains uncertain whether Martin Odegaard will be available.

The Arsenal captain has missed wins over Chelsea and Sunderland with a minor muscle issue, and Mikel Arteta was coy on the fitness of Odegaard and Leandro Trossard at his press conference on Wednesday.

Trossard was forced off late against Sunderland

“We will see with the medical team,” said Arteta when asked about injuries.

Pushed on Odegaard being out and a timeframe for his return, the Arsenal boss said: “I didn't say that”.

The likes of Declan Rice and Martin Zubimendi will need to be rested at some point, but Arsenal host Wigan in the FA Cup this weekend, and so changes are expected to happen then rather than against Brentford.

If there is rotation in defence, Piero Hincapie could come in for Riccardo Calafiori, who struggled on Saturday in what was his first Premier League start since December.

Arteta could opt to be cautious and start Gabriel Martinelli, who impressed off the bench in that match, in his place.

Max Dowman is closing in on his Arsenal comeback but this game will come to soon for the 16-year-old.

Predicted Arsenal XI (4-2-3-1): Raya; Timber, Saliba, Gabriel, Hincapie; Zubimendi, Rice; Madueke, Eze, Martinelli; Gyokeres

Injured: Dowman, Havertz, Merino

Doubts: Odegaard, Trossard, Saka
