Aston Villa defeated Manchester City 1-0 in the Premier League on Sunday afternoon.

The two teams began the game showing attacking intent, as Villa’s Emiliano Buendia and City’s Tijani Reijnders both fired shots from inside the penalty area.

Lucas Digne had an effort deflected for the hosts before Matty Cash gave them the lead moments later.

The full-back received a pass from Buendia before firing a left-footed shot into the right side of the net, registering his second goal of the campaign.

City almost responded immediately through Erling Braut Haaland, but goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez saved his effort.

Villa captain John McGinn combined with Boubacar Kamara before pulling the trigger, but his effort was turned behind for a corner.

The home side headed into the break as the better side, limiting City to just one shot on target.

Man City began the second half on the front foot, with Phil Foden and Reijnders coming close to restoring parity.

McGinn registered Villa’s first attempt after the break when his shot from inside the box was deflected away from goal.

Manager Pep Guardiola made three changes just after the hour mark as his side continued their search for the equaliser.

Jeremy Doku almost set up the equaliser, sending a brilliant through ball into space, but Villa’s defence cleared the danger.

Goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma produced a brilliant stop to deny Jadon Sancho from doubling Villa’s lead in the 70th minute.

Man City thought they had equalised when Haaland struck the ball home, but VAR ruled his effort offside.

Villa have collected 12 points from their last five games – the joint-best record in the Premier League.
