Aston Villa close to sealing defender sale | OneFootball

Aston Villa are poised to sell defender Sil Swinkels to Sheffield Wednesday.

According to ExpressAndStar.com, the 22-year-old is close to a permanent move and is expected to undergo a medical at the League One club before the end of the week.

Swinkels spent last season on loan, first with Exeter then Chesterfield, and had interest from several EFL sides and clubs on the continent. He previously gained League One experience with Bristol Rovers and Exeter City.

A Vitesse Arnhem academy graduate, he joined Villa in 2020 and has made two senior appearances. The latest came in a Carabao Cup win at Wycombe in 2024.

He remains well regarded by Unai Emery and the deal taking him to Wednesday is believed to include a matching rights clause, requiring Villa to be notified and given the chance to rival any future bids for the centre-back.

Swinkels made 24 appearances in all competitions for Chesterfield in the second half of last season.
