Aston Villa are keen to sign Atletico Madrid defender Matteo Ruggeri, according to MARCA.
The 24-year-old has caught the eye of Villa’s recruitment department following consistent performances in Spain and during his earlier breakthrough in Serie A.
Capable of operating as a traditional left-back, an aggressive wing-back, or on the left of a back three, Ruggeri’s tactical flexibility makes him an especially attractive target for Unai Emery.
Ruggeri did not take part in Atletico’s training on Tuesday, and a move could accelerate soon, with his agents currently aware of Villa’s interest.
The Midlands club’s push for left-sided defensive depth comes as they prepare to bid farewell to the Paris Saint-Germain-bound Lucas Digne.
Villa had earmarked Pervis Estupinan as a replacement, but new AC Milan boss Ruben Amorim reportedly wants to evaluate him in pre-season before sanctioning any exit. Unwilling to wait, Villa are now pivoting to other options.
Having only joined Atletico Madrid last summer on a long-term contract running through 2030, Ruggeri remains a valued squad member in Madrid.
However, with starting opportunities expected to be limited under Diego Simeone following Alejandro Grimaldo’s arrival, the defender could be open to a new challenge in England if a regular role is offered.
Villa are not the only team to have shown interest in Ruggeri this summer, with Serie A giants Juventus and Roma previously considering a move.
With three signings made so far this summer, Villa are not done in the market ahead of their Champions League return, courtesy of a fourth-place finish and Europa League success last season.
