Aston Villa have been tracking Celta Vigo defender Oscar Mingueza, who is keen on a move to the Premier League this summer.

According to Sky Sports, Villa are one of several clubs hoping to sign him on a free transfer at the end of June.

His versatility will appeal to Villa manager Unai Emery. He is a right-back who can deputise at centre-back and left-back when required.

However, Newcastle United are also interested. Top clubs in Serie A and La Liga are monitoring the situation.

Mingueza would be a shrewd signing for Villa

Mingueza would be a smart addition for several clubs, especially because there is no risk involved in signing such an experienced operator on a free transfer.

Villa need proper depth if they are serious about competing across four competitions next season.

Mingueza is a far more convincing option than Lamare Bogarde at right-back.

Bogarde is a talented young player with promise, but asking him to provide reliable cover for Matty Cash during a demanding campaign feels risky.

Mingueza arrives with experience at the highest level, tactical intelligence and the technical quality Emery demands from his full-backs.

The Spanish international is comfortable progressing the ball, combining in tight areas and operating in multiple defensive roles.

That flexibility could prove invaluable when injuries and fixture congestion inevitably strike.

Villa struggled badly when key players were unavailable this season, and Emery cannot afford another thin squad heading into the Champions League.

Mingueza would not only push Cash for starts but also raise the overall level of competition in Villa’s backline.
