Manchester City midfielder Tijjani Reijnders has emerged as a transfer prospect for Atletico Madrid ahead of the summer transfer window, as per reports.
The La Liga club’s reported interest in the 27-year-old comes as they await a response from one of his former teammates, Bernardo Silva, who recently parted ways with Manchester City as a free agent after nine illustrious years.
While signing Silva on a free transfer will make a great deal for Atletico, Diego Simeone‘s side could lose this transfer race to domestic rivals, Barcelona, who are understood to be the Portuguese’s preferred next destination.

Atletico have reportedly reached an agreement with Wolves for midfielder Joao Gomes, with an official announcement pending. The Spanish giants are also considering Reijnders as a part of their major summer midfield revamp.
Atletico Madrid have launched talks with Manchester City to secure Reijnders this summer, according to RadioMarca. However, Mail Sport cite that the La Liga outfit appreciate it will be a tall order to pull off the signing.
Los Rojiblancos signed midfielders Alex Baena and Johnny Cardoso last summer, however, the duo were unable to have ideal debut seasons at the Wanda Metropolitano due to injury issues.
Later in January, Obed Vargas and Rodrigo Mendoza also moved to the Spanish capital but the youngsters appear to be a part of the club’s future plans and potential candidates for loan exits this summer.
Despite having some good options in the midfield, including Gomes’ reported arrival, Atletico are still looking for further reinforcements in that area.
The aforementioned report by journalist Matteo Moretto suggests that Atletico have approached and opened talks with Manchester City over a possible deal for Reijnders as Simeone and co aim to strengthen their squad for the new season.
From Italy: Manchester City willing to sell Tijjani Reijnders this summer amid growing Juventus interest
Reijnders arrived at the Etihad Stadium from AC Milan in June last year on a five-year deal, worth £46.5 million.
The Dutchman made a strong start to his journey at Manchester City, with two goal contributions in an all-time great Premier League debut performance in a 4-0 win over Wolves as he went on to receive regular starts in the opening months of the season.
However, the midfielder could not maintain a top spot in Pep Guardiola’s pecking order into the New Year, starting in 19 out of his 28 appearances in the English top-flight last term.
Overall, Reijnders had featured in 47 matches across competitions for Manchester City, wherein he netted seven goals and provided eight assists.
Even though he was unable to maintain his spot under Guardiola, things could turn around for the Netherlands international following the Catalan’s recent departure from the Etihad Stadium.
While City could be open to parting ways with Reijnders this summer, especially amid interest from top clubs, Enzo Maresca, who has been widely speculated as Guardiola’s successor, is expected to assess the squad prior to reaching a decision.
