Atletico move for Joao Gomes in the balance after talks stall | OneFootball

Joao Gomes’ proposed move to Atletico Madrid has stalled, leaving the Wolves midfielder’s future uncertain this summer, ExpressAndStar.com understands.

Jorge Mendes and Gestifute, who are close to both clubs, were brokering the switch. A fee of around £40 million was discussed and an agreement was believed to be close, with Atletico ahead of European and Premier League rivals.

Talks have since hit a snag and Atletico are assessing alternative midfield targets. A deal could yet be revived, but completion is in the balance. Other clubs are showing interest in signing him this summer.

The Brazil international, who missed the World Cup, was left out of the final day draw at Burnley in May. Then head coach Rob Edwards said he felt a knee issue and was not risked.

A week earlier, after the draw with Fulham at Molineux, Gomes appeared to bid farewell to supporters in what was expected to be his last home outing.

Wolves have sprung surprises this summer, with Andre signing a new contract to stay in the Championship. They have since brought in free agents Kieran Trippier and Raul Jimenez, as new boss Cesar Peixoto targets promotion back to the Premier League. There is still significant work to do on the squad, and while keeping Gomes would be a major boost, a departure remains the likeliest outcome.
