Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang showed he still has the magic as Marseille came from behind to beat Newcastle 2-1 in the Champions League at the Stade Vélodrome.

Newcastle looked to have the perfect start when Harvey Barnes fired them ahead inside six minutes, calmly slotting past Gerónimo Rulli after a neat move involving Anthony Gordon and Sandro Tonali.

They were nearly two up moments earlier when Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg cleared Malick Thiaw’s header off the line.

Roberto De Zerbi's men grew into the game and finally levelled within 60 seconds of the second half. Aubameyang latched onto Darryl Bakola’s through-ball, rounded Nick Pope, and tucked the ball home from a tight angle.

The Magpies briefly thought they had regained the lead through Barnes, only for the goal to be ruled out for offside.

The French side struck again in the 50th minute. Timothy Weah’s darting run down the right created space for Aubameyang, who got ahead of Fabian Schär to flick the ball into the near post and complete his quickfire double.

Eddie Howe's men pressed for an equaliser but were repeatedly denied by Rulli and Marseille’s organised defence. Aubameyang’s brace secured the hosts’ second win of the campaign and brought Newcastle’s three-game winning streak to an end.
