Chelsea defender Axel Disasi refused to join West Ham United on transfer deadline day despite both clubs holding talks over a loan deal, and he has revealed why he was reluctant to seal the move.

West Ham manager Graham Potter wanted to bring the 27-year-old Frenchman to the London Stadium to bolster his defence but eventually settled for Brighton & Hove Albion centre-back Igor Julio.

The Hammers boss wanted a replacement for Nayef Aguerd, and Disasi was identified as a target.

Chelsea were open to a deal, demanding a £5 million fee from West Ham and asking that his wages be covered in full.

Both clubs agreed on the terms of a deal, but Disasi was not keen and he has revealed that he snubbed a move to join the Hammers because he only wanted to secure a return to AS Monaco.

“In the period between the approaches from Bournemouth and West Ham, Monaco arrived and that hit me emotionally,” the Chelsea star told French outlet Le Media Carre.

“I had three incredible years at Monaco. When they came in, all the memories came back. Monaco is home.

“I hoped that Chelsea would find a solution to allow me to leave on loan. I pushed until the last minute to go to Monaco.”

A move for him to join the Ligue 1 club fell through and he is now being linked with a move to Besiktas, with the summer transfer window in Turkey closing on September 12.

West Ham could do with such a player but Potter will have to wait until January for further reinforcements or settle for free signings.

The East London club are in talks to sign their former goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski as he is a free agent after they released him at the end of last term.

A deal for the Pole is expected to be wrapped up in the coming days, but they are not expected to sign any other free agents.
