FC Barcelona can count themselves lucky to have dodged another medical headache. Nico Williams, one of the most sought-after talents in La Liga last summer, is currently going through a tough spell at Athletic Bilbao. Like Lamine Yamal, the young Spanish international is suffering from a persistent groin injury that has been hampering him for several months and now threatens his season.

An injury that could require surgery

According to the daily Sport, the conservative treatment put in place by the Basque medical staff has yet to produce the desired results. Williams, unable to play consecutive matches, continues to struggle with chronic pain in his groin. Faced with this situation, Athletic is said to have consulted several external specialists to explore the best solution for the player, and surgery now appears to be an increasingly likely option. It's a weighty decision that could sideline him for several months.

Such an outcome would be a real blow for Athletic Club, where Nico Williams is seen as the cornerstone of their sporting project. It's worth remembering that FC Barcelona had made him a top target during the last summer transfer window, before the player ultimately decided to extend his contract in Bilbao. In hindsight, that choice is now sparing Barça from having to manage two major medical cases: Lamine Yamal's and, potentially, Williams'.

At just 22 years old, Nico Williams remains one of the most promising forwards in the Spanish league. But this recurring injury, if it leads to surgery, could stall his rise just as he seemed ready to take the next step.
