Pau Cubarsi headed Barcelona in front at Montilivi, only for Thomas Lemar to level three minutes later as a taut Catalan derby swung sharply. According to Football Espana, whatever the outcome it could have major consequences at both ends of the table.
The first half brought clear chances at both ends, with Raphinha hitting the post and Joan Garcia denying Vladyslav Vanat. Dani Olmo then won a penalty from Daley Blind in first-half stoppage time, but Lamine Yamal struck the woodwork for a second time from the spot.
Barcelona pressed after the break and on the hour Raphinha clipped the frame again from close range. From the ensuing phase, Jules Kounde delivered and Cubarsi powered a header home for the opener.
Girona hit back swiftly. Ivan Martin’s initial cross was blocked by Cubarsi, but his second found Lemar, the on-loan Atletico Madrid midfielder tapping in at the back post.
The contest remained finely poised after that rapid exchange, with both sides still searching for separation in a fiercely contested derby.
