Even though Marc-Andre Ter Stegen featured in the club’s official group photograph for the 2025-26 season, it seemed evident he was in his final days as an FC Barcelona player. The German goalkeeper has been given the green light to join Girona on loan.

Although it is just a loan for now, it feels like the end of the road for the 33-year-old as a Blaugrana player. The loan looks like a teaser before the main picture, a transfer in the summer.

According to Fabrizio Romano, Barcelona have authorised the club captain to travel to Girona today for his medical ahead of formalising his departure. It has been reported that the two Catalan clubs have a full agreement for the transfer.

This comes on the back of Hansi Flick leaving him out of the squad list for the trip to face Slavia Prague in the Champions League. It is clear that the deal is in its final stages and only a matter of time before it goes through.

The emergence of Joan Garcia has all but ended hopes of Ter Stegen returning as Barcelona’s number one. His injury troubles in recent seasons have forced the club to make a definitive decision in this direction.

From the player’s perspective, he still has a World Cup to prepare for, where he hopes to be Germany’s number one, and he needs regular game time. This should come his way at Girona, as they need a reliable goalkeeper.

Ter Stegen also benefits from not having to change cities and can continue his life as it is. It is a very smart loan from the player’s perspective, and a good stint could help Barcelona secure a transfer fee in the summer.
