Barcelona have begun their presidential election process, with Joan Laporta resigning to stand for re-election at the 15 March vote.

The club said in a statement that the resignation, required under Article 42.f of the club statutes, was formalised at Monday's board meeting, when the election was officially called.

Nine other directors have also stepped down to seek fresh mandates, including vice-presidents Elena Fort and Rafael Escudero.

Rafael Yuste, previously vice-president, has assumed the presidency on an interim basis. Josep Cubells has been appointed vice-president and secretary, with Alfons Castro named treasurer.

Laporta announced the election date last month and will run. The ballot will decide who leads the club for the next four years.
