Barcelona’s summer transfer activity has been dominated by attacking reinforcements, with Anthony Gordon already through the door and the club pushing hard to sign both Julian Alvarez and Bernardo Silva.

However, the defensive unit has not been completely forgotten, and the club are keeping their options open in that department as well.

According to Cadena SER, Barcelona have kept the option of signing a left-footed centre-back open this summer, even though the club have clearly prioritised signing attackers.

The sporting management and Hansi Flick’s technical staff are aligned on the view that a centre-back capable of playing on the left side of a defensive pairing would provide valuable balance and additional options to the current squad.

The club are ideally looking for a defensive partner for Pau Cubarsi. It was, in fact, a priority earlier in the summer, but the likely renewal of Andreas Christensen and the club’s faith in Ronald Araujo has altered things a bit.

Conditioned by departures

The reality is that Barcelona’s ability to act in the defensive market will hinge on how quickly they can move players out of the club.

The same financial constraints shaping the Alvarez and Bernardo Silva operations also apply here, meaning a centre-back signing would only be possible if the economic conditions allow.

The club are not actively pursuing a specific target at this stage but are prepared to react if an interesting opportunity emerges in the coming weeks, whether through a player becoming available or a deal presenting itself at the right price.

For now, the attacking priorities come first. But the left-footed centre-back folder, as the report makes clear, has never been closed.
