A headline member of the first-team ranks at La Liga giants Barcelona has on Sunday evening come in for fresh criticism online.
The player in question? Marc-André ter Stegen.
Barcelona are of course currently locked in action, on the domestic front.
In the penultimate outing of the club’s campaign, and with the Blaugrana having already sewn up the La Liga title, they have welcomed Villarreal to Catalunya’s capital.
With just four minutes on the clock, however, Hansi Flick’s troops found themselves behind on the scoreline.
After the visitors broke Barca’s backline with ease, Ayoze Pérez rolled a composed finish into the far corner of the net.
And as much, as alluded to above, has since given rise to something of a backlash on the part of the Barcelona fanbase.
Whilst some opted to focus their criticisms on the club’s backline, opened up far too easily by one pass, a whole host of others took aim at Marc-André ter Stegen.
Back in from the off on Sunday, the consensus was that the German did not cover himself in glory in his efforts to keep out Villarreal’s opener.
So much so that an altogether unflattering nickname for Ter Stegen has returned in force online, with the shot-stopper again being referred to as:
‘Ter Statue’
