Barcelona are searching for a new striker this summer, with it seen as increasingly likely that one of their current number nines will depart. Robert Lewandowski and Ferran Torres have both been linked with moves away, and Lewandowski is viewed as the likelier exit as his contract expires in June.
Julian Alvarez remains the leading target, although striking a deal with Atletico Madrid is considered extremely difficult. Lower-cost options are also under review, alongside mid-range solutions where Joao Pedro fits. CaughtOffside reports that Barcelona are seriously interested in the Chelsea forward after his first season at the club.
Pedro has 18 goals and six assists in all competitions, and he could have ample opportunities to add to that at the Spotify Camp Nou.
Chelsea may be unwilling to sell only 12 months after his move from Brighton, yet a fee under €100m would align with Barcelona’s budget for a new number nine. At 24, he is improving and could prove a shrewd acquisition.
Pedro is not an out-and-out striker, which might concern sporting director Deco. Even so, he could link effectively with Fermin Lopez, Lamine Yamal and Raphinha, an enticing prospect for supporters.
For now, interest in Pedro is at an early stage, and whether it gathers pace as summer nears remains to be seen.
