João Cancelo has again raised the prospect of returning to Benfica, saying it is not imminent and would hinge on a pay cut. He also stressed his strong emotional bond with the club.
"I have to go to Benfica at a time when I say, 'I will lower my salary'. To play for Benfica is like at Barcelona, for love," he said, speaking to Canal 11.
"Having only two games for Benfica’s first team has stayed with me. If I feel that I cannot deliver the level Benfica demand, I will not go."
He also praised José Mourinho: "I would like to be coached by him. José Mourinho is a reference in Portuguese football."
Currently tied to Al Hilal and on loan at Barcelona, Cancelo is valued at 9 million euros. This season he has made 12 competitive appearances for the Catalans, seven in La Liga, two in the Champions League and three in the Copa del Rey, totalling 740 minutes, with one goal and three assists.
