Born in Measham, Thomas enjoyed goal-laden stints at Mansfield Town and Scunthorpe United in the early stages of his footballing career before joining Newcastle United in 1962.

Barrie cost United a record fee when moving to the North East and was prolific in front of goal for the Magpies, scoring 50 times in 78 competitive appearances.

Thomas scored 21 times during the 1963/64 season under Joe Harvey's management before returning to Scunthorpe in 1964, spending a further two years at the Iron.

His final club was Barnsley, carrying out two years at Oakwell, before cruciate knee damage forced the centre-forward to retire in 1968, bringing down the curtain on a glittering 14-year professional career which saw him score over 200 goals.

The club's thoughts are with Barrie's family and friends at this difficult time.
