Liverpool’s reported interest in Michael Olise could face a major obstacle, with Bayern Munich preparing to secure the winger on an even longer-term contract. According to the Liverpool Echo, the Bundesliga champions are considering offering Olise fresh terms despite his current deal running until 2029.

The 22-year-old only moved to Bavaria from Crystal Palace last summer for a fee of around £52 million, but his impact has been immediate. Named rookie of the year in Germany after registering 20 goals and 23 assists in his first season, Olise has quickly become central to Bayern’s plans.
For Liverpool, the Frenchman has long been earmarked as a possible successor to Mohamed Salah. Reports have suggested that a move as soon as next summer was under consideration, with Olise’s technical flair and creativity making him an obvious candidate for Anfield’s right flank.

Yet Bayern’s proactive stance complicates matters. By moving early on a new deal, they not only protect their investment but also send a clear message to potential suitors like Liverpool that Olise remains off-limits.
Bayern Sporting Director Christoph Freund has already expressed his satisfaction at how the winger has settled in. “Michael feels extremely comfortable in the group. It’s just a good mix at the moment. We deliberately wanted to be a bit smaller. Of course, we’ve said several times that if Phonzy (Davies), Jamal (Musiala), and Hiroki (Ito) come back, then he’ll be bigger again in terms of depth. But the quality is very, very high, and we still have good competition.”

Lothar Matthaus added to the praise, saying: “He has everything an outstanding footballer needs. I see no limits for him. And the example of Ousmane Dembélé shows that a winger can become a world-class footballer. It always depends on the team’s success, especially in the Champions League, but yes, I trust Olise to do it.”
While Olise continues to shine in Germany, Liverpool will have to consider whether pursuing him remains realistic. Bayern’s determination to lock him down could force the club to identify alternative targets as they plan for life beyond Salah.
Olise looks tailor-made for Anfield, a creative wide forward with the flair, vision and numbers to match. Seeing him thrive in Germany while Bayern move to keep him long-term is frustrating for Liverpool fans, especially with the uncertainty over Salah’s future.
The club hierarchy should have been more aggressive last summer when Palace were open to selling. Instead, Bayern swooped in and now Liverpool are left on the outside looking in. Fans will rightly ask why a player who fits the profile so perfectly was allowed to slip away.
The numbers speak for themselves: 20 goals and 23 assists in his debut Bundesliga season. That is the kind of end product Liverpool have lacked from wide areas beyond Salah. Matthaus’s comments about Olise having no limits only reinforce what supporters already suspect: this is a world-class talent in the making.
Unless Liverpool act decisively, Olise will remain a dream rather than reality. For fans, that is a bitter pill to swallow. At a time when the squad is in transition, missing out on a player like Olise feels like another opportunity wasted.
