Bayern Munich are ready to step up their efforts to sign Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi on a free transfer next summer.

Sky Germany journalist Patrick Berger claims Bayern director of sport Max Eberl will hold direct talks with the English defender next month in an attempt to lure him to the Allianz Arena.

Eberl is currently working on sorting out Dayot Upamecano’s contract extension while keeping an eye on Guehi as a potential alternative if he decides to leave.

Upamecano’s deal expires at the end of the season, and Bayern have been negotiating for several months to secure his long-term future.

A plethora of European heavyweights are keeping tabs on his situation.

Even if Upamecano ends up staying, Bayern view Guehi as a top target to bolster the backline, especially with the futures of Kim Min-jae and Hiroki Ito hanging in the balance.

Guehi is a top-class centre-back who combines defensive solidity and passing intelligence.

The 25-year-old has established himself as one of the best defenders in the Premier League. He helped the Eagles win the FA Cup last season.

Barcelona, Real Madrid and Liverpool are monitoring Guehi. He can reach a pre-agreement with the clubs outside England from January.

While the financial aspect will play a key role in deciding his next destination, Guehi wants to play in the Champions League and have a shot at more silverware.

Atletico Madrid and Inter Milan have also expressed their interest in the England defender.

Meanwhile, Bayern have added Borussia Dortmund’s Nico Schlotterbeck to their list of potential defensive targets, but face competition from Barca.
