Jan Bednarek left the Sporting match injured and remains in significant pain, leaving his involvement against Benfica on Sunday unlikely, with the full extent of his rib damage due on Thursday.
According to O Jogo, the Porto centre-back has sustained trauma to the rib cage and must undergo further tests to assess the damage from two blows to his torso. The club have also lodged a complaint against Sporting forward Luis Suárez.
Medical checks aim to confirm whether there is a fracture and, if so, how severe. A misaligned break would be the worst outcome, involving segment separation or anatomical deviation, while an aligned fracture would be less serious and amount to a fissure.
Initial assessments suggest those fracture scenarios are not the most likely, but confirmation is awaited. Bednarek is still experiencing marked discomfort hours after the collision.
Even without a break, the rib trauma leaves the Poland international very debilitated and with slim chances of featuring at the Luz. Any involvement would depend on his pain tolerance and on sufficient confidence that he could contest duels safely, which could be problematic.
