The possibility of Jose Mourinho returning to Real Madrid is beginning to gather even more momentum, with Benfica now preparing for life without the Portuguese coach.
According to fresh reports from MARCA, it has come to light that Benfica are increasingly aware that Mourinho’s departure at the end of the season is becoming a realistic scenario.
The growing confidence around a possible move to Real Madrid has pushed the Lisbon club into actively exploring replacement options rather than waiting for a final decision.
Benfica are said to be determined not to get caught by surprise if Mourinho ultimately accepts Madrid’s proposal.
Because of that, they have already started working behind the scenes on identifying a new manager, with Marco Silva currently emerging as the preferred candidate.
The current Fulham manager has strong support internally due to his reputation in Portugal and the belief that his footballing philosophy matches the project envisioned by Benfica president Rui Costa.
However, Benfica are also aware that appointing Silva may not be straightforward.

The Portuguese coach is attracting growing interest from several clubs following another impressive season in England, potentially complicating Benfica’s plans.
Everything now appears to depend on Real Madrid making the first official move.
Reports suggest Madrid are waiting for their remaining La Liga hopes to disappear mathematically before accelerating plans regarding the managerial situation.
Once that happens, the club is expected to intensify the process of appointing Mourinho.
In fact, as reported before, direct talks between Florentino Perez and Mourinho are expected to take place next week to determine the next course of action.
Financially, the operation is also considered manageable for Madrid, as Mourinho’s release clause is believed to stand at around €3 million.
