Benfica forward José Melro ‘to join’ Marítimo permanently

Benfica forward José Melro is close to a permanent move to Marítimo. Record writes that Benfica should secure a sell-on percentage to protect future returns, given the potential he showed in the academy.

The 21-year-old has had limited minutes for Benfica B this season, a situation that could change at the current Liga 2 leaders.

Melro has yet to make his first-team debut. From 17 he trained with the seniors under Roger Schmidt, impressing with mobility and finishing, and Barcelona also monitored him.

This season he has nine appearances and 451 minutes for Benfica B, seven in Liga 2 and two in the Premier League International Cup, scoring one goal. He is valued at 600 thousand euros, with those minutes coming under Nélson Veríssimo.

A permanent switch would add another option to Marítimo’s attack as the Madeira club chase a return to the Primeira Liga.
