Benfica are keeping tabs on Matheus, the Joinville goalkeeper, as they shape plans for next season in futsal. A further addition in goal is not being ruled out after inconsistent displays from the current options.
Record reports that the Brazil international is the Seleção’s first-choice and recently helped win the Copa América, beating Argentina 2-1 in the final. The 26-year-old has extensive international experience.
Sporting are also in the frame, with an eye on replacing Henrique Rafagnin, who is out of contract. At the João Rocha, Matheus would be back-up to Bernardo Paçó.
Across town, Matheus’s profile is seen as a strong fit for Benfica. Current goalkeepers Léo Gugiel and André Correia are contracted until 2027. Gugiel is not minded to relinquish the starting role, while Correia wants to leave, which could ease any approach.
Financially, Benfica are viewed as having the edge, though Sporting may hold a sporting advantage because Matheus wants to work with a different coach rather than Cassiano Klein, his boss at Joinville. His contract runs to the end of 2026. Both clubs plan summer moves, which would require a fee to Joinville.
