Benfica had no players named in the 2025/26 Liga Portugal Team of the Year, which was dominated by Porto and Sporting.
According to Glorioso 1904, the coaches and captains of the 18 teams chose the side, and despite standout seasons from Vangelis Pavlidis, Andreas Schjelderup and Fredrik Aursnes, no Benfica player made it.
Confirmation came with the inclusion of Sporting forward Luis Suárez in attack, sealing the final places after a prolific debut season in which he finished as the league’s top scorer.
Champions Porto provided five players, Sporting contributed four and Braga two. Benfica, despite their stature and early season expectations, had none selected.
The outcome is likely to prompt debate among supporters given the club’s history and the contributions of several figures across the campaign. The vote was clear and left Benfica out.
Benfica finished third with 80 points, unbeaten but with 11 draws, six at Estádio da Luz, equalling their 2007/08 record. José Mourinho’s side scored 74 and conceded 25.
