Benfica v Real Madrid refereeing appointment revives bad memories for Mourinho | OneFootball

The refereeing team for Benfica v Real Madrid includes officials with whom Mourinho has a history. According to Glorioso 1904, several members have previously dismissed him.

Italian Davide Massa will take charge. He sent off Mourinho during his Roma spell in October 2021 against Napoli, after a heated exchange of words. Mourinho avoided commenting on the appointment at a recent press conference.

The fourth official is Luca Pairetto, who also directed Mourinho to the dressing room in a Roma v Verona match. La Stampa reported at the time that Mourinho told Pairetto he had been sent there on purpose by Juventus.

VAR for Wednesday is Guanluca Aureliano, who dismissed Mourinho in a game with Atalanta. After a booking in the first half, Mourinho was sent off late on for protests, then stayed silent post-match as his players declined to speak in solidarity.

Mourinho has previously said he would be ashamed to be that referee.

Benfica host Real Madrid on Wednesday, 28, from 20:00, in the eighth and final matchday of the UEFA Champions League league phase.
