Bernardo Silva has revealed he has no plans to return to Benfica this summer, despite confirming the club made contact over a possible move from Manchester City.

Speaking to Portuguese channel Canal 11’s Soltinhos Pelo Mundo, a programme following Portuguese footballers playing abroad, the City playmaker discussed his future ahead of a likely departure from the Premier League champions.

In a teaser released on Friday, Bernardo admitted he would love to return to Benfica one day, but insists the timing is not right.

“I’m not going to Benfica,” he said. “One thing is certain: I want to return one day. I don’t know if, when I want to come back, the club will still want me. There were contacts to understand whether there was any intention.”

The Portugal international also revealed he hopes to resolve his future before the World Cup begins so he can focus fully on the tournament.

“I want everything sorted between the end of the season and reporting for national team duty because the World Cup is too important for me to be distracted by other things,” he explained.

Bernardo has scored three goals and registered five assists in 50 appearances for Manchester City this season.
