Lazio have apparently missed out on Jonathan Asp Jensen, as Deportivo La Coruña have reached an agreement with the player as well as Bayern Munich.
The 20-year-old is a Danish attacking midfielder who has been developing his game at the Bavarian club since 2022. Last season, he enjoyed an impressive campaign on loan at Swiss top-flight club Grasshoppers, thus attracting interest from several suitors across Europe.
Lazio have been working on signing the youngster for several weeks, positioning themselves ahead of the queue after reaching an agreement with the player’s entourage, which also represents Gustav Isaksen and Oliver Provstgaard. The player himself was keen to join his countrymen at Formello, reiterating his desire to sign for the Aquile.
However, Claudio Lotito and Co. failed to close an agreement with Bayern Munich. Italian journalist Gianluca Di Marzio revealed that the German champions turned down Lazio’s initial loan bid with an obligation to buy, as they wanted to immediately cash in on the midfielder.
According to transfer market expert Fabrizio Romano, Deportivo have seized the opportunity to strike a deal with Bayern, and they even have an agreement with Asp Jensen, who is open to joining the newly promoted LaLiga club.
This certainly isn’t the first time Lazio has squandered a lead in a transfer-market race. In fact, this has been the case more often than not in recent years. It remains to be seen how the management will react after failing to recruit a player well-liked by sporting director Angelo Fabiani.
New Lazio head coach Gennaro Gattuso is said to prefer Dinamo Zagreb’s Luka Stojkovic for the attacking midfielder, but the 22-year-old Croatian would cost more than Asp Jensen, especially following an eye-opening campaign that saw him contribute with 13 goals and 12 assists in all competitions.
