Sheffield Wednesday have made a step in their unpaid wages saga

Sheffield Wednesday are believed to have settled amounts owed to a large number of players and staff today.

Owner Dejphon Chansiri failed to pay playing staff on time for two months running, which allowed senior squad members who hadn’t received their wages the opportunity to hand in their notice to resign.

These wrongdoings could’ve resulted in an added transfer embargo, fine and a points deduction.

However, with news of an imminent takeover swirling, it now seems as though the Owls have resolved some of their financial woes.

It was reported earlier this week that the club had communicated its intention to pay their players after receiving a transfer fee after the sales of Djeidi Gassama and Anthony Musaba.

Now, according to the Star, Wednesday have followed through on that promise and settled the bulk, if not the entirety, of the amounts owed.

This includes money to both those still contracted at the club and others who have already departed, with the idea that it will subsequently lift their embargo relating to unpaid wages.

News like that will be music to the ears of Wednesday supporters, with it no doubt making a takeover all the easier to complete.

Furthermore, it also thought that non-playing staff are also in the process of being paid too.

Other embargoes that are due to unpaid HMRC payments and money owed to other clubs will still remain until they are settled.

Positive news for Sheffield Wednesday, but there is still work to be done

Although the fact that staff have been paid at Hillsborough is brilliant news, the Owls still have a sizeable number of issues they need to resolve.

The Steel City club still owes £2.2 million in tax to HMRC and with July’s wages approaching, it is yet to be seen whether Chansiri can avoid lighting striking thrice.

Wednesday still also have payments due to Southampton and Brighton over the loans of Shea Charles and James Beadle, whilst two second-tier outfits, Hull City and Norwich City, are owed smaller figures.

It is still yet to be seen what comes of the players who handed in their notices and whether this payment of wages has quelled that problem.

American billionaire Tilman Fertitta and Italian businessman Francesco Guardascione have both been credited with an interest in buying the club and that still seems like the most realistic option to get the Owls out of their current mess.

If Chansiri once again fails to pay staff at the end of July, these issues could once again become just as severe and with his track record, it wouldn’t exactly be a surprise.
