Blackburn Rovers vs Ipswich Town was abandoned after 80 minutes last weekend due to the extreme weather conditions
The EFL are set to take their time in solving the dispute between Blackburn Rovers and Ipswich Town.
According to Alan Nixon, both clubs have submitted their objections after their league meeting was abandoned after 80 minutes last weekend.
The pitch became unplayable due to extreme weather, leading to the referee to call off the game 10 minutes before the end.
Valerien Ismael’s side were 1-0 up courtesy of a second half goal from the penalty spot from Todd Cantwell.
It is understood that Blackburn are seeking the result of the match to stand, or for only the final 10 minutes to be replayed.
However, Ipswich are believed to be pushing for a complete replay, which will null and void the game that took place at Ewood Park.
Jacob Greaves had also been sent off for the Tractor Boys, with Blackburn hoping that his dismissal will remain in place if the game is restarted.
It’s been claimed that the EFL are capable of choosing any of the three options on the table, per their rules. It has also been reported that they are delaying any decision for now as they want to take their time before coming to any conclusions.
The EFL are reportedly looking for any precedent that has been set that can help them find a solution to the case, but that is proving difficult.
A previous game between Huddersfield Town and Blackpool was abandoned on the final day of the 2014/15 season, with the game declared a 0-0 draw despite only 48 minutes played, with supporters flooding the pitch in protest of the Tangerines’ ownership at the time.
It’s believed that the EFL don’t see that as a precedent because the Terriers accepted the game finishing 0-0 due to it being the final game of the campaign and the points ultimately didn’t matter to their final league position.
Blackburn will have every right to feel very aggrieved if the game is replayed in full at some point in the future as they held a goal and man advantage.
Every point matters at this stage of the season, so neither club will be as easy-going as Huddersfield were a decade ago.
Ipswich will have to consider themselves lucky if they get the chance to play a full 90 again, as it’s the most unfair outcome at this stage.
If the game can be finished from the 80 minute mark then that would perhaps be fairest, although it would be a huge waste for Ipswich to travel that distance for a 10-minute match.
