Chelsea head coach Sonia Bompastor was pleased with her side’s performance as they defeated Liverpool 2-0 at Kingsmeadow on Sunday afternoon.

Sjoeke Nüsken and Lauren James got the goals as Chelsea won their first match since the shock departure of head of women’s football, Paul Green.

When speaking to the media after the match, Bompastor expressed pride in her team’s character following a difficult week.

“Everyone can be proud of everyone in this team, staff and players,” Bompastor said. “This week has been really tough for us in terms of emotions.”

Chelsea had to bide their time to get their goals but Bompastor was pleased with her side’s performance.

She said “I’m really pleased with the result. Every game is really important for us and right now, we are performing well in the basics.

“It took us a while to score the first goal but in the second half, we took control of the game.”

Forward James scored the decisive second goal and assisted Nüsken in the first half. Bompastor noted the player’s positive performance in what was her first 90-minute appearance in approximately 10 months since last March’s UEFA Women’s Champions League match against Manchester City.

She said “It was a good performance from LJ. She helped the team to win the game and scored a great goal. She is trying to get back to her best level and she is doing really well right now. I’m really pleased with how she is playing and how she contributes to the team.

“I think when LJ is performing at this level, she’s one of the first ones you put in your starting XI. That’s important going into the business end of the season to have players with quality, who are performing.

“The most important thing is to keep LJ as fit as possible, so it’s important for her also to build on this fitness because she can perform at a really high level and contribute a lot to the performance.”

Another player who impressed Bompastor was academy graduate Lexi Potter who replaced Kiera Walsh in the 74th minute. She acknowledged Potter’s growing confidence and maturity and expressed hope for her to have the best possible future at Chelsea.

She said “I’m not really surprised because I know the quality she has. Sometimes, it’s a bit difficult as a young player because of the depth we have in the squad at Chelsea. You have high competition with all of the other players in that position but she always has the right mentality.

“She always works really hard and I think anytime she has the opportunity, she’s ready to perform.”

Chelsea are next in action when they play host to Manchester United in the Adobe Women’s FA Cup at Kingsmeadow on Sunday.
