Sport1 reports that Borussia Dortmund sent a representative to the NRG Stadium in Houston to assess Benfica centre-back Tomás Araújo during Portugal’s 1-1 draw with RD Congo in the World Cup group-stage opener. The Bundesliga runners-up are interested in signing the 24-year-old.

The centre-back department has become a headache for head coach Niko Kovac, with Niklas Sule set to end his career at 30 and Emre Can facing a lengthy lay-off with a serious injury.

Complicating matters further, Nico Schlotterbeck has only recently extended his contract to 2031 yet remains on the radar of leading European clubs, including José Mourinho’s Real Madrid.

Real Madrid and Bayern Munich are also following Araújo, so his staying at Benfica for 2026/27 cannot be guaranteed at this stage.

Even so, Benfica are not entertaining a sale. The centre-back is viewed as a key figure for the present and future, and the club do not wish to weaken the heart of their defence.
