Rúben Dias has offered reassurance to Tomás Araújo and Renato Veiga after Portugal’s opener at the World Cup. The Manchester City centre-back stressed the defence’s constant dialogue and the need to instil calm in younger colleagues.
According to Glorioso 1904, Dias said the defenders have been communicating since the start of the camp, not solely because anyone was set to play, and that the four defenders see it as their duty to pass confidence to those in front.
He urged Araújo, of Benfica, and Veiga to be themselves, show no timidity and take responsibility on the pitch. Speaking up is part of the job, he added, even if a firmer word is directed at a senior team-mate, as efficiency comes first.
His remarks followed Araújo accepting responsibility for the goal conceded in the draw with the Democratic Republic of the Congo, which marked Roberto Martínez’s first match of the tournament in charge of Portugal.
Araújo reflected that the team moved the ball too often sideways and backwards and created little threat. He said the second half improved slightly with a few chances, but it was insufficient. He also lamented conceding from a set piece that should not have happened.
