After his spellbinding performance in yesterday’s Bundesliga match against RB Leipzig, Borussia Mönchengladbach keeper Moritz Nicholas has drawn praise from all quarters. Professionals on both sides of Leipzig’s narrow 1-0 victory over their Westphalian guests praised the 28-year-old. Nicolas recorded 11 saves and held the German Red Bulls to just one goal amid a 2.43 xG performance from the RB attack.
Nicolas – who beat back plenty of competition to earn the Gladbach No. 1 keeper slot this summer – has already been linked with a move to the Premier League. If the BMG keeper can keep delivering performances like he did yesterday, a summer move definitely appears to be in the cards. Gladbach have plenty of other options to fill the role, including young (yet experienced) keeper Tiago Pereira Cardoso.
“We ran up against an exceptional keeper today,” Leipzig’s Christoph Baumgarter noted in his post match interview with Sky Germany. “His saves stopped plenty of chances, including several world class ones.“
“There were a surplus of chances,” RB captain David Raum added. “But we couldn’t convert against him.“
“The match could have easily swung the other way,” RB head coach Ole Werner said at the post-match press conference. “He [Nicolas] frustrated us today.“
“The fact that Mo was voted the man-of-the-match despite the fact that we lost speaks volumes,” Gladbach head coach Eugen Polanski remarked whilst fielding the final question of the day at the post-match press conference. “Such a performance doesn’t surprise me.
“It’s a manifestation of what he delivers week after week and day after day in training,” Polanski continued. “He’s an excellent keeper. We needed him today and will need him to win matches in the coming weeks.“
“Accordingly, I’m very pleased,” Polanski concluded. “But certainly not surprised.“
