PSV fought their way to the round of 16 of the Champions League on Wednesday evening with an excellent performance against Juventus. While things have been going badly in the Eredivisie for weeks, the Eindhoven team played convincingly at home against the ‘Old Lady’ of Turin (3-1), much to leading figure Luuk de Jong’s delight.
“I think we went really deep. We had to go all out for 120 minutes and everyone gave it their all,” the proud attacker said afterwards to Ziggo Sport. “But we also showed good football. There were phases where we managed to push them against the wall.”
“You can see that we can play really well at times,” De Jong continued. “Even though there were some minor mistakes today that really need to be removed. (…) We did that in the past period as well. But there were many matches where things just went wrong and the opponent scored with the only chance. Now things went well for once, but we forced that ourselves.”
Peter Bosz thinks it is special that Feyenoord and PSV are in the eighth finals of the Champions League. “I am very happy with Dutch football. People sometimes laugh about it. In terms of money, we can never compete with the top countries. Let us be proud of each other,” said the PSV coach following the victory (3-1) after extra time against Juventus.
Bosz referred to the first round of the main phase of the Champions League, when PSV and Feyenoord were no match for Juventus (3-1) and Bayer Leverkusen (0-4) respectively. “Then I was asked what Dutch clubs were doing in the Champions League. We have now given that answer.”
The victory over Juventus was deserved, Bosz judged. “You want to offer the supporters something. Of course I would rather win badly than lose. But you prefer to combine a good result with beautiful play. That worked today. That makes me a happy coach. Maybe that’s why I was so relieved.”
