Manchester United will be powerless to stop Bruno Fernandes from leaving the Old Trafford club this summer if any of his suitors meet his €65 million release clause and he is willing to leave, according to the Daily Telegraph.
Man United are determined to keep the Red Devils captain this summer but he wants assurances over the club’s ambitions before committing his future.
Fernandes wants to win the Premier League title and the Champions League, and he wants reassurances about the club’s ambitions.
Man United missed out entirely on European football this season after finishing 15th last term and only qualified for the Europa League at the end of the 2023-24 campaign.
They are guaranteed a place in the group phase of the elite European competition next season following some impressive results and performances under manager Michael Carrick.
However, Fernandes wants to know if the Red Devils board will do enough in the summer transfer window to boost the club’s chances of winning major trophies next term and going forward.
The release clause in the 31-year-old’s contract is active until the first half of July, and he may be waiting to see how Man United’s transfer plans unfold before making a decision.
Fernandes is not short of suitors after another impressive campaign which has seen him weigh in with eight goals and 19 assists in 31 league games.
The Portuguese has a contract with the Red Devils until the end of next season but they have an option to extend it by another year until June 2028.
They have already handed his fellow midfielder Kobbie Mainoo a deal until June 2031, with an official confirmation expected in the coming days.
However, convincing Fernandes could take a while as he is not ready to spend the remainder of the most important years of his playing career at a club where he is not guaranteed the biggest trophies.
