Having seen Rasmus Hojlund stumble in front of goal all season, Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim is naturally on the lookout for a goalscoring option who is versatile and Premier League proven.
Which explains why the club are close to signing Matheus Cunha of Wolverhampton Wanderers, who has impressed the Portuguese tactician with his ability in front of goal and his eye for a killer pass.
However, the Brazilian is not the only player on the club’s radar with The Peoples Person relaying that Bryan Mbeumo of Brentford is another option that the club have as backup.
And as per Fichajes, talks are expected to intensify in the coming weeks with the Cameroonian “revelation” open to leaving the Bees in the summer.
In fact, as the report suggests, the 25-year-old would find a move to Old Trafford hard to turn down. He has 18 goals and seven assists in all competitions this season.
“Manchester United have their sights set on one of the brightest revelations of the current season in England. Bryan Mbeumo, Brentford’s Cameroonian striker.
“Mbeumo, for his part, is reportedly open to a career leap, and the option to wear the Manchester United shirt is a challenge that’s hard to turn down.
“Talks could intensify in the coming weeks, and Brentford already recognizes that retaining him will be a difficult task given the interest from a club as historically important and ambitious as Old Trafford.”
Reports have suggested that the Bees are likely to demand around £50 million to let him go given his importance to Thomas Frank’s plans.
But his current contract with the London club is valid until 2026 and the chances of a cut-price exit cannot be ignored especially if Brentford fail to agree a new contract and if the player himself pushes for a move.
Mbeumo can play up front, as an attacking midfielder and even out wide, with versatility seen as a key attribute by Amorim. The Cameroon international figures in the 97th percentile for chances created and 100 percentile for successful crosses.
Defensively, he’s no slouch either. He is in the 92nd percentile for duels won and in the 98th percentile for possession won back in the final third (all stats via fotmob). These stats show how much of a perfect fit he would be for Amorim.
