Head coach Markus Högner had announced that he would focus on a compact defence and high running intensity. To this end, he made three changes to his team compared to the recent Regionalliga match against Deutz: Frederike Kempe, Sara Ito and Ann-Sophie Vogel started in place of Mia Böger, Noreen Günnewig and Ronja Leubner. FCB coach José Barcala showed his third-tier opponents respect and fielded numerous international players in the starting XI.

From the outset, it was the intense game Högner had expected, with his team concentrating on putting in the hard yards in defence and looking to hit Bayern on the counter when the opportunity presented itself. The Bundesliga team from Bavaria enjoyed the first few chances of the game, but Dortmund goalkeeper Laura van der Laan was more than equal to them, including a strong save to derny Bayern's Pernille Harder after just a few seconds. The BVB women defended passionately and pressed their opponents high up the pitch at times.

When Munich created chances in the early stages, it was mainly through Klara Bühl on the left wing, who was denied by van der Laan again in the 17th minute. However, Pernille Harder then managed to get the better of the Black & Yellow's keeper to make it 1-0 in the 27th minute. Shortly before that, van der Laan had done well to deny Alara from close range and Caruso from distance. Seven minutes later, striker Harder got the better of van der Laan a second time and made it 2-0 for the defending champions after a solo run into the penalty area. With Bayern dominating possession, the BVB women managed just a few offensive forays in the first half. However, crosses from Vogel and Rita Schumacher in the 40th and 43rd minutes found no recipient in the penalty area.

After the break, the spectators at the Rote Erde stadium saw a more courageous start from the Black & Yellows. The packed stands created a euphoric atmosphere that did justice to the floodlit game. The noise grew even louder in the 59th minute when the BVB women were able to switch gears after an FCB free-kick. The speedy Jasmin Jabbes won the footrace against Carolin Simon after a through ball from Sara Ito on the right side, but her deflected shot zipped just wide of the target.

A break in play was caused when Jenske Steenwijk, who pulled up injured without any contact from an opponent, had to be substituted. Böger and Leubner replaced Steenwijk and Schumacher in the 64th minute.

With their lead secured, the defending champions were content to keep the ball for longer. Yet some carelessness creeped in, allowing the Black & Yellows to create chances. A deflected cross (73) from Ann-Sophie Vogel had to be cleared off the line by Giulia Gwinn. In the closing stages, neither team managed to create any dangerous chances, as good defensive performances on both ends led to a goalless second half.

The BVB women still have two competitive matches in the Regionalliga West on the schedule this week: the gates of the Rote Erde stadium will reopen on Friday (3 October, 15:00 CEST) for the rescheduled match against GSV Moers. Tickets for the home game are available in the online ticket shop. After a day of recovery, the Borussia women will travel to Bielefeld on Sunday (5 October) for their third game of the week. The away game at the Postheide against Arminia Bielefeld will kick off at 13:00 CEST.
