Levante’s survival hopes were rocked by an unfortunate stoppage-time equaliser against Girona, yet 20-year-old Carlos Espí has emerged as their frontline focal point, a striker for the present as much as the future.

He started and scored at the Ciutat de València, and, according to Superdeporte, the Tavernes de la Valldigna native is on David Gordo’s preliminary Spain Under-21 list for this month’s Euro 2027 qualifiers against Cyprus and Kosovo. He debuted for Spain Under-19s in 2024.

Espí never doubted his ability, even when a loan was floated, preferring to develop in València. That decision has seen him become the centre-forward Levante rely on to stay in Primera.

After the Girona match, head coach Luís Castro said the striker could become a very serious prospect in the future.

At 194 centimetres he offers power and penalty-box menace. Having previously scored only as a substitute, he now has three in his last two matches. He averages a goal every 100 minutes, four in 400, a rate bettered only by Robert Lewandowski on 93 minutes and Kylian Mbappé on 88.
