Carlos Miguel could claim his first Palmeiras trophy on Sunday after starring in the Campeonato Paulista final first leg. Signed last year as Weverton’s understudy, he became first choice after Weverton left.
According to Globo.com, penalties are now a major training focus, with Abel Ferreira looking to exploit the keeper’s reach in such moments, something that could be important in 2026.
On Wednesday at Arena Barueri, with Palmeiras 1-0 ahead, he waited out Robson and blocked a central spot kick to preserve the lead. Robson is Novorizontino’s centre forward and the competition’s top scorer.
Flaco López, scorer of the winner, praised his team-mate’s composure and the audacity to hold position in a final.
It was his first penalty save for Palmeiras after previous efforts from Jorginho of Flamengo, Azulgaray of LDU and Calleri of São Paulo had gone in.
He has started 13 of 14 matches in 2026, conceding eight. Despite one error in the 2-2 draw at Atlético-MG in Belo Horizonte, his consistency has told.
He says daily work at the club is light and comfortable, he thanks staff for their support and stresses off-field preparation feeds performances. With an advantage, he adds, they remain focused and hope to leave with victory and the title.
Miguel will start against Novorizontino on Sunday at Estádio Jorge Ismael de Biasi in Novo Horizonte, kick-off 20:30 Brasília time.
