According to Globo.com, Cartagena’s Estadio Jaime Morón León will unveil a new lighting system when Junior Barranquilla face Palmeiras at 21:30 on Wednesday, Brasília time, after a major refurbishment of the city’s only stadium. Fewer than three years ago it could not stage night matches.

Junior have moved 133km from Barranquilla because the Metropolitano is being renovated to stage this year’s Sudamericana final.

Until recently the ground was widely described as neglected and practically in the dark. During Colombia’s 2023 Women’s World Cup bid, FIFA found nine of the country’s 10 venues met minimum standards, the exception was Jaime Morón León.

In 2024 the Government of Bolívar invested 4 billion Colombian pesos, about R$ 5.6 million, to improve the pitch and dressing rooms and build tunnels to the benches. Further work this year totals nearly 8 billion pesos, about R$ 11.2 million, to modernise infrastructure, lighting and services and consolidate Cartagena as a sporting hub for the 2026 Libertadores.

Upgrades include a 100-luminaire floodlight system and a new mast with 40 luminaires behind the east stand, each aimed at specific areas of the pitch. The ticket office has been refurbished, dressing rooms expanded, and two new big screens installed.

Bathrooms and access areas have been improved, security reinforced and parking optimised. The stadium can now host up to 17,100 supporters.
