Manchester United midfielder Casemiro has reacted after regaining the Brazil national team captaincy.
Fresh from returning to the starting lineup and playing a key role in United’s 2-0 victory over Sunderland, Casemiro has now joined up with the Brazil national team for the international break.
The Selecao have two upcoming friendlies as they step up their preparations for next year’s World Cup.
Brazil are poised to take on South Korea in Seoul on Friday before facing Japan a few days later.
In the absence of Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson and Paris Saint-Germain star Marquinhos, Carlo Ancelotti has elected to hand the captaincy to Casemiro.
Casemiro has captained Brazil 17 times, with his most recent appearance as skipper coming in October 2023 against Uruguay.
Being named captain once again is a testament to his resilience, especially after spending time away from the national team following a dip in form at club level. It was Ancelotti’s appointment as head coach that saw Casemiro return to the fray on the international stage.
Ahead of the meeting with South Korea, Casemiro said in a press conference [as quoted by the club website], “I’m one of those players who thinks there are many leaders and ways to lead. Each one forming their own leadership.”
“I like to give more examples, more details of how to do it, how to get there, how to be, where to be, how to work. Without a doubt, my relationship with the coach, whom I’ve known for over 10 years, creates a greater affinity. But I like to demonstrate it [leadership] and set an example for the younger ones.”
“Having been with the team for a while and having played in two World Cups, of course you try to convey what to do and what not to do.”
“But, when it comes to the national team, they’re established players, and you just end up having to adjust a little more. I am one of those wo thinks there are many ways to lead and this is my way of leading.”
On playing South Korea and Japan, he remarked, “With all due respect to other teams, South Korea and Japan are the top sides [in Asia]. We’re playing against high-level teams, and it’s important to get to know the team, to understand their level, and see how the opponent is doing.”
“It’s crucial to diversify. This is a World Cup, where there will be many rivals, and you don’t know who you’ll face.”
United summer signing Matheus Cunha is also in contention to play in the two friendlies.
