The CBF released the VAR audio from São Paulo’s 2-1 win over Flamengo at Morumbis on Thursday morning, covering a late penalty claim by Arrascaeta in the first round of the Brasileirão. The booth upheld Wilton Pereira Sampaio’s on-field decision not to award a foul by Alan Franco in the final play.

Arrascaeta reached a rebound inside the six-yard box and was clipped before striking with his left foot. He still completed the action.

Video assistant Rodrigo D’Alonso Ferreira judged that the attacker drew his leg back, collided with the São Paulo defender, and still got his shot away, so the call stood.

Refereeing analyst PC Oliveira initially felt there was no penalty, saying the arm contact he first saw did not create impact. He added that from the pitch it is difficult to pick up the defender’s action.

A later broadcast angle, not shown in the CBF footage during the VAR check, highlighted lower contact from Alan Franco on the midfielder. Oliveira then called it an imprudent foul under the law and said a review should have been recommended.
