Kaizer Chiefs co-coach Cedric Kaze has waxed lyrical about the redemption arc of goalkeeper Brandon Petersen in the 2025/26 campaign.

The 31-year-old goalie signed for the Soweto giants in the 2021/22 season, but failed to establish himself as a starter upon his arrival at Naturena.

As a result, Bruce Bvuma and Fiacre Ntwari got the nod to start in goal ahead of him last season, as Chiefs were searching for a long-term no.1 in between the sticks.

However, Petersen became a suprise inclusion in the starting XI in Amakhosi's Nedbank Cup triumph over bitter rivals Orlando Pirates last season, ending a decade-long trophy drought.

He has since become the first choice goalkeeper and has been handed the captain's armband. Petersen has kept 15 clean sheets in 25 matches across all competitions this term, much to the delight of Kaze.

“I would say that Character wise he's been the same since last season - since I got to this team I found a very responsible player even without wearing the armband, but he's the figure of authority of the players,” said the Burundian tactician.

"He's the one collecting fines, he's the one writing up players that are late. He's a player with an authority that everyone respects within the club. And as I said few days ago, good things happen to good people and his commitment, his dedication to training [is commendable].

"Sometime last season he wasn't playing but the level of commitment and dedication at training every single day without complaining was unbelievable, and today you can see that with the chance that he's been given he's proved to everyone that he's a very good goalkeeper and he's a very good leader too.

The Ajax Cape Town youth product will be eager to catch the eye of Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos ahead of the highly anticipated 2026 FIFA World Cup.
