Barcelona’s famed La Masia academy has delivered yet another shining prospect, and this time it is Dro Fernandez capturing headlines. At just 17, Dro made his senior debut in Barcelona’s 2-1 victory over Real Sociedad, a moment that not only signalled the arrival of a new star but also underlined the club’s determination to retain its most prized talents.
TBR Football reports that despite significant interest from across Europe, including Premier League giants Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester City, Dro has no intention of entertaining a move away. Instead, talks are already underway regarding a new deal once he turns 18, with his current contract running until 2027.
Graeme Bailey of TBR Football has confirmed Barcelona’s approach, highlighting how the club has learned from painful past experiences. “Since the days of Cesc Fabregas and Gerard Pique, Barcelona have been working hard to keep the best talent from La Masia,” Bailey explained.
The Catalan side knows that once a player emerges from their academy and impresses on the biggest stage, Europe’s elite circle quickly. “Dro is a huge talent. When you talk to Barca sources about him they get very excited.”
The interest from England and beyond is real. “Arsenal, Chelsea and City have, and are, keeping close tabs on Dro’s progress and his people are aware of the potential interest but he is very happy at Barcelona – he loves the club and wants to become a key player for them. He will be signing a new deal in the New Year.”

This follows a summer in which Chelsea reportedly held discussions with Fermin Lopez, while Manchester City and Tottenham were also linked. Dro’s emergence, however, looks set to anchor Barcelona’s youth policy as they seek to blend homegrown brilliance with their senior stars.
For Dro himself, the first-team call-up was a dream realised. Hansi Flick placed him in the starting XI against Sociedad, and the youngster could not believe it. “I’m happy, very happy. It’s incredible. When they told me I’d be starting, I didn’t believe it at first, but then I calmed down,” Dro said.
He added, “The players and the coach reassured me, they told me to do what I do well in training, and that gave me confidence.” His 45-minute showing impressed those inside the Camp Nou, and Barcelona fans are already eager to see more of their new jewel.
Excitement surrounds Dro Fernandez, and rightly so. From an English fan’s perspective, there is both admiration and frustration. Admiration because his talent looks obvious and Barcelona’s strategy to tie him down reflects the value they place on youth. Frustration because Premier League clubs such as Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester City have been actively monitoring him, only to see Barcelona move swiftly to shut down any hope of a transfer.
Fans of these English clubs will feel disappointed that such an emerging star is unlikely to be prised away. For Chelsea supporters, already stung by missing out on Lopez, the fact that Dro appears fully committed to Barcelona adds another layer of irritation. City and Arsenal may believe they still have a chance in the future, but the noises from Spain suggest Barcelona are not prepared to let him slip.
From a broader footballing standpoint, Barcelona fans should be thrilled. La Masia has long been the heart of the club, and the emergence of Dro signals that the academy conveyor belt is still functioning at the highest level. If he continues his rise, supporters can expect him to become a central figure over the coming years.
The sense of expectation is high, and the reaction from both club and player indicates that Dro could be the next in a proud line of homegrown icons. For now, rival clubs may only watch from afar.
