Liverpool are facing a contract conundrum over Ibrahima Konate. The defender joined the Reds back in 2021 - on a £35m deal from RB Leipzig.

The Frenchman has since established himself as one of the best defenders in the Premier League - succeeding in winning the Premier League title alongside Virgil van Dijk last season.

But Konate’s contract is expiring at the end of this season. If no new agreement is reached with the player’s entourage then he will walking out the door for FREE in summer 2026.

It’s an eventuality the Anfield club are desperate to guard against - but so long as Konate rebuffs their efforts to renew then they will be powerless to prevent it from happening.

Konate contract talks stalling

Konate’s demands have been reported at £200k per week - and it’s also been suggested that the club have already FAILED with multiple offers for the stopper.

Real Madrid are of course right there for Konate in case he decides to walk out on the Reds - as they are plotting a defensive overhaul next summer.

Bayern Munich - facing the prospect of losing Dayot Upamecano on a free - could also turn to Konate to solve an impending defensive issue.

Those two overseas clubs are mentioned in a new report from TBR Football - which also warns about interest from within the Premier League.

PL rivals sounded out over Konate

Chelsea, Manchester City and Arsenal have all been alerted to the potential availability of Konate by “intermediaries” according to the report.

“Intermediaries are doing their work and making the likes of Arsenal, Chelsea, and Manchester City aware that Konate could be available for nothing next summer,” the report reads.

“Liverpool understand that Konate himself is not pushing himself to any club, but agents and intermediaries are going to be doing their jobs and looking at options for him.”

Liverpool's pressing centre-back concerns

It remains to be seen what happens with Konate but this doesn’t seem like a good sign.

If Konate is being touted as a potential free transfer for other top Premier League teams then we can take it for granted that he remains quite far away from renewing his deal with Liverpool.

In any case, there remains interest in Marc Guehi - and several other centre-backs have been recently named as targets in case Konate doesn’t renew.

Arne Slot’s need for a new player in that position has increased in recent days through the long-term injury suffered by 18-year-old Giovanni Leoni.
